Choose One Skill and Commit to It Completely

This is the first and most important step, and also the one most beginners rush past. The temptation is to do everything — writing, design, video editing — because you want maximum opportunities. What actually happens is you become average at everything and excellent at nothing, which is the hardest position to sell from. Think about what you can already do reasonably well. Can you write clearly in English? Design a decent flyer on Canva? Build a basic website? Organise information in a spreadsheet? Handle customer emails efficiently? Any of these can become a freelance income stream in Nigeria if you develop it with focus. Pick one and go deep on it for at least 30 days before expanding.

Build a Simple Portfolio Before Pitching Anyone

Here is something nobody tells you about freelancing in Nigeria early enough — clients do not hire strangers, they hire evidence. Your portfolio is that evidence. It does not need to be a fancy website. A well-organised Google Doc with three to five samples of your work is genuinely enough to start landing clients. If you have no previous work to show, create samples. Write three articles on topics you care about. Design five flyers for imaginary businesses on Canva. Edit a short video from YouTube footage for practice. Post these as your portfolio and be upfront that they are demonstration pieces. Clients respect competence and honesty far more than a polished website with nothing real behind it.

Choose Where You Will Find Clients

This is where most people starting freelancing in Nigeria get stuck. They build a portfolio, then stare at it waiting for clients to magically appear. Clients need to be found actively, at least in the beginning. There are two main channels that work well for Nigerian freelancers right now: local pitching and international platforms. For local clients: Instagram DMs to small Nigerian businesses, Facebook groups for entrepreneurs, LinkedIn, and simply walking into local businesses with your phone and samples ready. My friend Chisom got her first three clients by DMing Lagos food brands directly on Instagram with a short, specific pitch and two sample captions she had already written for their brand. She sent 22 messages and got three replies. Three were enough. For international clients: This is where the dollar income lives. Platforms like Fiverr and Upwork connect Nigerian freelancers with clients in the UK, US, Canada, and Europe every single day. The onboarding is free, the learning curve is about one week, and the earning potential is significantly higher per job than most local clients.

Write a Pitch That Actually Gets Replies

Most pitches Nigerian freelancers send get ignored because they sound like this: “Dear sir/ma, I am a hardworking and passionate freelancer with skills in writing and design. Please consider me for your project.” This tells the client nothing useful and gives them no reason to reply. A pitch that works is specific, short, and focused on the client’s problem rather than your biography. Three sentences is ideal. One sentence about what you noticed about their business. One sentence about exactly what you can do to help. One sentence directing them to your portfolio or asking a single question. That is it. Try it 20 times. You will be surprised.

Set Up Your Payments Before You Need Them

There is nothing more deflating than landing your first freelance client and realising you have no way to collect the money cleanly. Sort your payment setup before you start pitching, not after. For Nigerian freelancers receiving naira payments, a standard GTBank or Access Bank account works fine. For dollar payments from international clients, you need one of the following.
